Hill Smith Family Estates achieves IWCA Gold membership

Australia’s leading wine producer gains prestigious IWCA Gold Member status.

International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) is delighted to announce that Hill-Smith Family

Estates, leading Australian wine company has achieved Gold Member status by completed Scopes 1-3.

Their efforts in ensuring that winemaking operations are powered by, at least, 20% of renewable

energy on site and demonstrating a consistent reduction of emissions per liter of wine means that they are the first Australian to gain the highest standards in carbon emission reduction.

Commenting on their new status, Head of Sustainability Louisa Rose from HSFE said, “Since joining IWCA in 2021, we have had a renewed commitment to and understanding about reducing our carbon footprint. Achieving Gold Member status is a testament to our team’s and the Hill-Smith family’s

dedication and the collaborative efforts within the IWCA community.”

“Our decarbonization journey is ongoing, integrally linked with our other sustainability projects” added Rose. “We have implemented significant water and energy efficiency measures and invested in a program of lightweight glass solutions and renewable energy sources, and we continue to embrace new ideas and technologies as they emerge, and we work towards our 2030 and 2050 net zero goals.”

“2024 was also the first year we included in setting in our greenhouse gas emissions inventory. We began a revegetation project in 2007 at our Oxford Landing vineyard on the Murray River, where over six years we planted 400 hectares with 215,000 indigenous plants. While we had not measured the carbon sequestration from these conservation areas until now, we have been watching the health of the site and vineyard increase, and the biodiversity flourish.”

“We are delighted to that Hill Smith Family Estates have achieved Gold membership of IWCA,” said Katie Jackson, Torres, President of IWCA. “As one of Australia’s most important wine business’, their success comes to reinforce the presence of IWCA there. As vine growers, we are severely suffering from the consequences of climate change, our duty to future generations is to act now. We hope that many more wineries, inside and outside our country, join our cause to accelerate the decarbonization of the wine industry.”

The IWCA Annual Report is published each November showcasing members’ individual efforts in their journey to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, giving an exclusive snapshot of how wineries are adopting innovative practices in the face of climate change. It is an essential read for commentators, opinion-formers, buyers, and fellow winery owners who appreciate the real need to tackle the climate crisis in the context of the long-term sustainability of the wine industry.
