12 IWCA members from Spain and Portugal joined forces on 5 February 2024 at Barcelona Wine Week to pledge their commitment to continued carbon emission reductions across all areas of their businesses.

The group of pioneering producers signed a joint agreement committing to universal carbon emission reduction across every aspect of their business.

The 10 focus areas are:

  1. Curtail Greenhouse Gas Emissions across the wine supply chain.

  2. Effective measurement and promotion of wine-specific, full scope standardized and audited GHG inventories to track progress and detect emission’s hotspots.

  3. Improve renewable energy use with continued investment in renewable energy sources.

  4. Lighter weight bottles promoting the ongoing implementation & use of lighter weight bottles below 420g. (*where technically feasible)

  5. Increased vineyard resiliency improving soil care and health, better viticulture practices and biodiversity.

  6. Promote water recycling and reuse in every aspect of wine production.

  7. Reduce fuel emissions used by owned or managed vehicles, industrial equipment, and agricultural machinery.

  8. Commitment to combat greenwashing in our industry, encouraging transparency and rigor to inform and educate third parties.

  9. Promote and engage with stakeholders to encourage global GHG emission reduction in Spain & Portugal.

  10. Achieve carbon neutrality no later than 2050 in line with the UN's Race to Zero parameters.

This signed commitment is an important move forward by an influential group of top wineries in Portugal and Spain. It defines and highlights their commitment to reducing emissions and combating climate change.
